Pysanky for the Cure

Race for Hope 2022 Fundraiser

PLEASE NOTE: THIS FUNDRAISER ENDS AT 11:59PM ON TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 2022.

Making pysanky (plural) is a folk craft from Eastern Europe where egg shells are intricately decorated using layers of bees’ wax and dyes. Each egg takes a few hours which includes emptying and cleaning the shell, sketching the design, working through five colors, and finally melting off the wax.

Have a minute-and-a-half for a video? Here is how it is done. The work is all freehand, no stencils involved, so no two eggs will ever be exactly alike. The wax and dye dictate a lot of the final result, so there will be a few imperfections.

I've made pysanky for years and wanted to share a special message of health and new beginnings through a Race for Hope 2022 design. Originally, pysanky were meant to give recipients blessings or good wishes, with each symbol conveying a sentiment.

Each decorated egg includes the following design elements. This is their meaning.

  • Stars symbolize life and growth.

  • The center rose is love and caring.

  • Ladders lift up prayers.

  • Stylized pine branches represent strength and stamina.

  • Nets mean fishers of men, but I think of them as bringing people together.

  • The DC icon represents the common enjoyment of David’s music that brought all of us together.

For a contribution of $25 or more to my personal fundraising page (link below), I will send a randomly selected pysanka like the ones you see below to thank you for supporting this important cause. Every egg has a DC icon in the design on one side and a fully traditional design on the other side, Should you prefer to type in the web address yourself, the donation page is secure.braintumor.org  Enter Sharon Stone in the search boxes on the main page.
